Barricade® Drainage Wrap™ acts as a secondary layer of protection against water and moisture — it’s the home’s raincoat and windbreaker in ONE!
While the exterior cladding is your first line of defense against water intrusion, no cladding can stop water intrusion completely. Barricade Drainage Wrap’s engineered channels help move water away from the wall and create an airspace that creates standoff between the exterior siding and the sheathing substrate, enabling the surfaces to dry out once they get wet.
Barricade Drainage Wrap has a unique thin directional surface pattern that creates a standoff property to facilitate water drainage. Barricade Drainage Wrap’s flexible surface provides a drainage path for water to flow freely. Water is channeled safely down and away from the envelope.
Barricade Drainage Wrap creates a clear drainage path by creating an airspace between the sheathing and exterior cladding that allows water to drain down and out. Because Barricade Drainage Wrap is a semi-permeable wrap, any moisture or water that happens to get past the material can drain and dry to the exterior of the home.
Conventional smooth surface housewraps with typical horizontal lap sidings directly applied can “pond” water along the siding edges, particularly at the pressure points where it is fastened tightly to the sheathing substrate. Barricade Drainage Wrap prevents ponding because of its engineered surface pattern which enables water to flow freely down the exterior wall envelope to be collected by flashing carrying it safely away from the wall.
Any liquid water (wind driven rain) that has accumulated on the surface of the drainage plane can be evaporated and turned into a gas by the sun. In addition, during hot summer months, warm moisture-laden air (vapor) can get driven into the wall by solar heat towards the cool conditioned and drier air on the inside of the home. The driving force of the moisture vapor by the sun into the wall envelope is a phenomenon known as “inward solar vapor drive.”
The vented airspace created by Barricade Drainage Wrap’s unique surface provides a stop gap that blocks the transport of vapor by equalizing the air pressure across the entire space, thus relieving the pressure exerted on the drainage plane (sheathing and house wrap).
Because of conventional house wrap’s smooth surface, stucco has the ability to bond tightly to the house wrap when used by itself. This tight contact creates something known as the “tenting effect” and can destroy the water repellency of house wrap because of the pressure exerted by the stucco when it is directly applied. The stucco creates “capillary continuity” and as a result, the house wrap cannot properly defend against water intrusion when used as a single layer.
When a primary layer of felt paper or paper-backed wire lath is properly installed over the surface of Barricade Drainage Wrap, a “bond break” is created and thus dramatically improves and enhances the drainage properties of the stucco system.
